Abstract

Intangible assets can be classified into two major groups: a) knowledge assets, that we gather in the concept of "Intellectual Capital" and whose analysis was carried out in UZTARO number 66 (González Simón and Guenaga, 2008) and b) emotional assets, that we gather in the concept of "Emotional Capital" and whose analysis is carried out in the present study. The leadership factor is a strategic intangible asset to boost the development of both the "Intellectual Capital" and the "Emotional Capital" in the organizations. The attention we pay to emotions, as real productive assets, is the result of a preliminary analysis of the importance of emotions in the human being. In this paper we analyze the dimensions and characteristics of Emotional Intelligence for effective leadership. We also define the distinctive competences, both personal and social, that emotionally intelligent leaders should have. And finally we propose a typology of leadership based on Emotional Intelligence.
