This article analyzes the verbs of motion that appear in S. T. Coleridge’s English poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and its Basque translation by Joseba Sarrionandia, with a view to compare the lexicalization patterns of those two languages. Following the cla- ssification proposed by Talmy (1991, 2000) and Slobin (1991, 1996a, 1996b, 2000, 2004, 2005), it has been proved that Basque is a verb framed language, although it is closer to sa- tellite framed languages as far as information about Path is concerned (Ibarretxe-Antuñano 2004a). In order to see what happens in the translation between those two typologically different languages, we analyzed the strategies used by Sarrionandia when translating Coleridge’s poem from English (satellite framed) into Basque (verb framed).Downloads
