Abstract

This research is based on several authors´ contribution to a new old adult profile. Some authors discuss about a change in this population. In order to state that idea, they use several concepts like a new old adult profile (Canes and García, 1989), new aging (Bazo, 1992; 1996; 2000) and new retired (De Zayas, 1996). Although the authors do not agree with the concept to be used, they do agree in stating that the new profile of old adult has some characteristics that distinguish them from former generations (i.e., economic resources, accurate education level, before mandatory retirement, good health and participation in activities). Therefore, bearing into account that old adults have special and significant distinctions, our suggestion is to analyse the sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics of the new old adult profile in order to describe the current retired profile.
