Abstract

The article is dedicated to the pedagogue Elbira Zipitria, honouring the 100th anniversary of her birth, and it relates the whereabouts of education. Even if the evolution of bilingual education has had an important advance during the last decade, results are not as good as expected, and Spanish education’s superiority is still a fact. The article goes on listing the obstacles within the process of normalisation of the Basque education, which are, principally, political and administrative division of the Basque Country, lack of official recognition of the Basque language in a part of the territory and, lately, incapacity of bilingual education to make students became Basque language speakers. Solutions? On the one hand political will and adapted means; on the other hand, referring to school language, to guarantee the D model in education.
