Abstract

Aggressive behaviour in animals has been largely investigated, yet the data available on the mechanisms they have developed to cope with the negative effects of aggression is scarce. In this paper, a classification of different types of aggression is done, followed by definitions and examples of various peacemaking mechanisms that primates use. Then, the data available on sex differences regarding conflict resolution and empathy is revised, the procedures to measure empathy in humans analysed and possible reasons for such sex differences proposed.
