Abstract

The article analyses “bertsoak” (Basque popular poems) in The Three Liberal Years and on the first Carlist War, looking at the history of those periods. After doing a critical analysis of this source which is so useful to examine mentalities, it goes on the way “Foruak” (Basque traditional laws) and religion are shown in “bertsoak”, confirming that these two matters are present within carlist and liberal Basque people’ preoccupations. Different parties and social status’ attitudes are differentiated, emphasising points of view of people which are quite unknown to us. The article also shows the way “bertsoak” can be used in the historiography investigation, explaining possibilities this source offers.
