This article is based on the opening lecture of the 49th edition of the UEU Summer Course. It addresses the question of whether we have achieved the Basque University and, in relation to this, the relationship between the university and the nation building. After characterizing four nation-building-families who have carried out the current basque university system (Basque-centered-Statist, Academic-Institutional, Cooperative-Educational and Transformative-Critical) to make visible their particular contributions, their topos and their specific underlines, I propose to remake their strategic alliance. Also, I present some current experiences and point to several directions to move forward within the consensual objective of the basque university system and the common goal of the epistemic empowerment of the Basque Country.
