National identity and references in EiTB: ‘Gaur Egun’ news program’s case

Abstract

This work analyzes national identity and references in EITB’s news programs. The research is based on the review of the program Gaur Egun broadcasted at the time the nationalist Juan Jose Ibarretxe and the socialist Patxi Lopez were presidents of the government of the Basque Autonomous Community. The concept of the Basque Country, the oral references to territoriality and its imaginary in graphics and maps are studied in order to highlight the characteristics and differences in public media news in both mandates. The main conclusion of this work is the following one: the news produced on Basque television during president Lopez’s term reinforce Spanish national identity’s references in the programs.
