Abstract

Basque literature readers´ number and features are essential for this field. However, there is no specific research on it, except one about the features of young people´s reading habits and another one about teaching literature at school. I took into account research on sociolinguistics, cultural habits and reading habits in order to take a photograph of the reader´s reality, because, if we analyse research from a critical point of view, it might be useful to reflect Basque literature readers´ number and features. Even though all results are hypothetical, they can be used to approach reality: hypothetically, there would be about 15-000-20.000 fervent regular readers, 40.000 moderate regular readers, and, exceptionally, 100.000-150.000 occasional readers (all the previous included). The majority of them live in Gipuzkoa and Biscay, most of them in the first one, and, probably, the number is bigger among women, people aged 25-54, and, perhaps, among those who have a university degree.
