Abstract

This study analyzes emotions from a psychological perspective. First of all, it analyzes the current situation of research on emotion and the concept of emotion itself. It then goes on to examine the neurobiology of emotions, mainly based on Ledoux’s work (1996/1999). As far as the subjective emotional experience is concerned, the study analyzes how it is influenced by culture and the problem of verbal communication of emotions. On the other hand, it presents the debate about the expression of emotions and their cultural universality/specificity. It then briefly looks at the gender differences in emotion. Finally, the functions and effects of emotion are analyzed and the compatibility between emotion and reason is defended, bringing up the concept of ‘emotional intelligence’.
