Abstract

In this short essay, we would like to analyse links between religion and collective identity in Québec, Southern and Northern Basque Country. Thanks to Charles Taylor's concept of institution (distinction between service-institution and identity-institution), we observe links beween the Catholic Church and the nationalist assertion. This essay is divided into three parts, following a chronological pattern. First, we analyse the hegemonic ties existing between the Church and the Nation, in a cooperative-conflicting relation with the State. Then, we analyse very briefly the secularization process: Nation is set apart from anny denominational identity, but carries on with a tense relation with the State. The third and last paragraph is devoted to the contemporary resetting on these relations. We suggest that concerning issues such as self-determination, peace, public involvement of the Church, both Québec and Southern Basque Country form one pattern, while Northern Basque Country would remain on one side, in a specific position.
