Koldo Almandoz is one of the most significant filmmakers to have emerged in Basque cinema in recent years. The main purpose of this article is to uncover the keys to his suggestive filmmaking. Taking as a basis the short films that brought him international recognition —Razielen itzulera (1997), Belarra (2002), Amuak (2004), Midori (2006), Columba Palumbus (2007), Ahate pasa (2009) and Deus et machina (2012)— the aim is to reveal with rigour and precision the subjects, story lines and aesthetic proposals that predominate in his work. His cinema is open to free interpretation and its main axes are genre hybridisation, narrative experimentation and the primacy of the image.Downloads
