Abstract

In this paper, the Basque Government’s Basis for a language policy for the early 21st  century written by the Basque Language Advisory Board is studied. The paper analyses Basis’ interpretation of the ruling legal framework in the Basque Autonomous Community as well as the sociolinguistical evolution in the Basque Country in the last decades. The author shows how the Advisory Board’s proposal contains basic errors from both perspectives and how political interests have prevailed over analytical consistency.
