Abstract
In the 19th century the discovery of Photography produced a great revolution in Art. The new invention offered a very detailed real image, unknown until then. But the first photographic images had a big lack: the colour. The artists and photographers tried to resolve the deficiency of the new black and white image using artistic materials. And if we have in consideration that most of the photographic copies were made on paper, it isn’t strange to find out that the majority of those hand colored photographs have a paper support. Our research focuses therefore on a deeper knowledge of this type of photographs: photographic processes chosen for coloring, artistic materials used to apply the color and how these materials and processes could affect their conservation.
