Abstract

In this article, we research some Basque-language press of the nationalist parties before the Civil War. Although they were not the only ones that published Basque-language papers, and maybe they were not the most important either, we must refer to nationalist papers if we want to know well the pre-war Basque journalism. In Sabino Arana’s ideology, language receives only a subordinate function, because he saw it as a signe of the Basque race. Because of that, Basque-language is only a testimonial part of the P.N.V.’s papers. Nevertheless, there are some exclusively Basque-language nationalist papers, such as Euzko, a weekly that Lauaxeta created in 1932. Also in P.N.V.’s principal journal, Euzkadi, appears a Basque-language section, Euzkel orria, where three good writers construct a form of giving the information in Basque language Kirikiño, Orixe and Lauaxeta.
