Hypoacusia is associated with different cognitive impairments and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. In the hearing signal transmission process, voltage-gated potassium channels (KV) are essential. Alterations in these channels can therefore affect in sound discrimination and cause hearing loss. In addition, alterations in the expression and function of KV channels in Alzheimer's patients have been investigated. This study has observed an increase in the expression of KV3.1 and KV3.3 channels in the hearing cortex and inferior colicles of 18-month Alzheimer's mice compared to the control group. It has also been seen that this expression only occurs in neurons. Future understanding of KV channel pathophysiology in neurodegenerative diseases could be key to developing potential treatments.
