Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), a wide range of heart and blood vessels affections, are the leading cause of death worlwide. Lipid deposits in the arteries are one of the main factors in the developtment and complications of CVDs. Statins are the gold standard treatment when dealing with atheromatous plaque, but evidence has shown that they can end up causing type two diabetes mellitus (T2DM). To elucidate this diabetogenic mechanism, 3T3-L1 adipocytes were treated with different statines, in orden the address changes in glucose homeostasis and insulin resistante related gene expressions and microRNAs. miR-33a and miR-27b overexpression leads to a decrease in the expression of these genes, favoring T2DM development.
