Abstract

Herein, we showcase the photophysical characterization of a new generation of water-soluble BODIPY dyes labelling carbohydrates, to unveil their performance as fluorescent probes or singlet oxygen photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy in biomedicine. To this aim, different molecular strategies have been applied. On the one hand, cyano groups have replaced the fluorine atom of the boron to improve the fluorescent brightness of the fluorescent probes. On the other hand, halogenated BODIPYs have been tested to increase their cytotoxic power. In addition, styryl groups have been grafted to shift the emission within the biological window.
