Abstract

Lithium-ion batteries are intrinsically dangerous. Therefore, to operate safely and efficiently they have embedded electronics known as Battery Management Systems (BMS). Besides, the aim of functional safety design methodologies is to prevent humans and environment from harm caused by the malfunctioning of electronics. In this work the state of the art of functional safety oriented BMS is reviewed and, based on the identified gaps and omissions, a BMS design methodology is presented. Finally, the design of a prototype BMS has been proposed as a future work line in order to validate this design methodology.
