Abstract

Good communication between the supervisor and the doctoral student is essential. Concept mapping assists students in externalizing the conceptual knowledge they hold, and in doing so, it becomes a means for studentinstructor communication. Unfortunately, in doctoral settings, traditional concept maps fall short because they do not offer clues about both (1) the student’s readings that back their concept maps and (2) the discursive role that concepts and relationships play in the research narrative. Based on the experience of our research group, this paper describes the use of concept maps for conducting supervisory meetings, the limitations experienced in using a concept-map editor (CmapTools), and the development of a web extension called Concept&Go which aims to enhance this editor with a dedicated color-coded highlighter.
