Particle size and particle size distribution (PSD) are important properties of polymer latexes because they strongly affect the film formation and the rheology of the latexes. Thus, controlling them is of paramount importance during the production of waterborne polymeric dispersions. Advanced control strategies (feedback control) require online/inline measurements of the particle size to be able to track optimal trajectories. A number of technologies exist for the characterization of particles in suspension at the nanoscale. However, these techniques need highly diluted particle concentration samples. To overcome this problem, NanoPAT European Project was created, whose aim is to test the suitability of some new technologies to monitor the size of different type of particles in real time production.
