Young Basques nowadays comprise the first generation that holds no direct memories on the political violence that took place between 1968 and 2011. They are receivers of ‘second hand memories’, and necessarily rely on discourses mediated among others by their parents in order to reconstruct their own narratives about the past. We explore how some of the mechanisms that influence the sharing of memories within families, such as Welzer’s concept of ‘cumulaive heroisation’, are involved in the Basque case. We onclude that heroisation can be a means to manage taboo and lack of legitimacy.
