The CO2 concentration is increasing annually, and therefore reducing CO2 emissions is of uttermost concern. Steel slags may be used to overcome this issue, as they are suitable for mineral carbonation and CO2 capture due to their high CaO content. Accordingly, mineral carbonation may not only permanently capture CO2 molecules, but also might produce valuable and thermodynamically stable organic and inorganic materials. Mineral carbonation is conducted in industrial plants designed on purpose, but they have limitations. Thus, fountain confined conical spouted beds may be suitable for mineral carbonation and CO2 capture, but there is hardly any information regarding their applications in mineral carbonation. Accordingly, a thorough characterization of steel slags has been carried out in order to shed light onto mineral carbonation in spouted beds.
