Per- and polyfluorinated compounds are currently in the spotlight. They were synthetized in the 1940s, and by their peculiar properties (non-adhesion or thermal stability) they have been widely used in both industry and household appliances. This intensive and continuous use has caused PFAS to flow into drinking water and become part of the diet of living beings. Chronic exposure to PFAS, even at non-lethal levels, can lead to health problems such as cancer and neurodevelopmental issues. According to this, combining liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry, the presence of PFAS has been studied in two regions of Gipuzkoa with high industrial activity (Urola and Goierri) where water samples from three different basins have been taken from several towns.
