Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the case marking preferences in Basque-Spanish codeswitching (CS) among bilinguals who have Basque as their second language (L2). Furthermore, it seeks to investigate whether their bilingual profiles (language dominance) and their use of and attitudes towards CS influence these preferences. To this end, 24 L2 Basque bilinguals completed an acceptability judgment task comprising CS sentences and the Bilingual Language Profile (BLP) questionnaire to identify their bilingual profile. The results are that, in general, case marking is driven by the case-system of the subject’s language, as observed in L1 Basque speakers. Additionally, no correlation was identified between the acceptability of CS sentences and the participants' dominance. However, a negative correlation was observed when considering CS use.
