Some years ago, the construction of artificial latrines was proposed to detect the Pyrenean Desman, i.e. to build the semblance of a "camping tent" with a mat in the river. This method works well, but its efficiency has yet to be specified, and its seasonal variation has yet to be described. Here, in addition to determining the efficiency of artificial latrines, we optimized the method. The results show that the latrines are used equally over the year throughout the stream network. In the latrines, depositing the faeces of another individual did not improve the detection of Pyrenean Desman. Finally, we found that the best time interval between fixing the latrine and checking its results is 7-11 days. This methodology improves the logistics of the managers on this threatened species, which is very difficult to detect.
