Opuntia stricta var. dillenii is a fruit-bearing species within the Cactaceae family that produces a fruit commonly referred to as prickly pear, which is rich in bioactive compounds such as betalains and phenolic compounds. These compounds could play a crucial role in promoting health and could have a modulatory effect in the management of obesity. In the present study it was demonstrated Opuntia stricta var. dillenii extracts from tissues (whole fruit, peel, and pulp) can increase adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes and effectively prevent triglyceride accumulation in 3T3-L1 mature adipocytes mainly by reducing de novo lipogenesis, alongside an increase in triglyceride mobilisation. The identification of novel regulators of adipogenesis that promote hyperplasia, aligning with the lipid-lowering effect in mature adipocytes, may lead to effective therapies for obesity-induced metabolic disorders.
