Abstract

Due to the rapid expansion in the use of machine translation systems, we have a closer relation to its output than ever before. This could have direct implications in the use of the Basque language, as this technology has the potential to influence linguistic change. For this reason, in this work we address the differences between original and machine generated Basque online news. More precisely, we study the use of synonyms in each of the texts using automatic methods and metrics. Our findings reveal a notable degree of similarity overall between the two texts. However, we do notice a slightly more balanced and, therefore, more diverse use of synonyms in the human generated content.
