Alaine Agirre Garmendia's novels have a central and complex topic: mental health. The author covers all the dimensions of mental illness in her novels; not only does she address the personal, social, and family effects such types of disease usually bring, but through a disseminating role, she also talks about the management of emotional pain, the disease process or the discomfort and stigma that people suffering from this type of illness might cause in the eyes of society. Even so, the aforementioned axes are not presented alienated from the author: there is often no significant difference between what Agirre experienced and what is reflected in her novelistic literature. By combining discourse analysis and various interviews given by the author, the article aims to analyze the discourse created by the author about mental health.
