This study aimed to analyse the collective behaviour of the teams in the Spanish first division of men's professional football. To do so, 5,518 performances were analysed from 2011-12 to 2018-19. The teams were divided into four groups according to the final league ranking: Europe (1-6), Upper-Middle (7-11), Lower-Middle (12-17) and Relegation (18-20). The main results were that all teams showed significantly lower values (p < 0.05) in all the variables analysed (width, length, height and distance from the goalkeeper to the closest player of his team) when they played against European opponents. It seems that the performance of the teams was affected by the quality of the opponent, so it will be essential to contextualise the collective behaviour of the teams according to the opponent.
