Abstract

In this paper, one of the main problems that occurs in offshore renewable energy plants has been studied: the generation of biofouling. This problem has reduced the life time of the platforms, increasing the relative costs of their use and reducing the competitiveness of this type of energy in comparison to others which are not so sustainable. To avoid this and to increase the life time of the platforms, it is proposed to use bio-based coatings with antifouling properties. In addition to presenting the synthesis of latexes, which has shown good results in comparison with conventional coatings, a biofouling study has been carried out in real environment, in the ocean.
