Invasive mosquitoes, Aedes spp., pathogens, entomological surveillance, climate changeAbstract
Mosquitoes are important in public health, as they are vectors of pathogens that cause various diseases. Over the past half-century, the invasive species Aedes albopictus and Aedes japonicus have spread around the world due to globalization, climate and environmental changes. Since 2013, an entomological monitoring program has been established in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country (CAPV). The results show the increasing expansion of both species in the municipalities of the CAPV; in 2024, at least one species of the genus Aedes was detected in 50 of the 55 municipalities analyzed. For the time being, no autochthonous transmission of disease has been detected, but the population density growth of those mosquitoes could increase the risk of transmission in the future.
