Microplastics (MPs) are considered dangerous for the environment because they can release their additives and concentrate pollutants from the environment. Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are widely used as additional compounds in all kinds of plastics and studies show that they have highly toxic effects. This work focuses on studying the influence of salinity and ultraviolet radiation on the migration of Deca-209, contained in MPs of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) simulating a natural water environment, using the X-ray microfluorescence (μ-XRF) technique as an analysis method to monitor the whole process. The results showed that the presence of low salinities and UV radiation makes the migration of the FR easier.
