Abstract

Despite the wide utilization of the sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene based ionomers in proton exchange membranes for fuel cells (PEMFCs) they still present certain drawbacks. Nonenvironmentally friendly solvents are used to create the ionomers and the membranes present a rapid decline of the proton conductivity and a loss of performance at high temperatures, because at such conditions they lose the adsorbed humidity. In this work, we have tried to overcome these limitations by creating a cross-linked form of Nafion® sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene ionomer.
