Abstract

This research, located in the field of Nationalism Studies, focuses on compulsory education —more precisely, on the 6th degree of primary education— and examines the banal or unconscious transmission of Basque and Spanish identities through the analysis of Social Science textbooks used nowadays in schools located in the Basque Autonomous Community. Drawing, among others, on Michael Billig’s thesis of banal nationalism, qualitative content analysis has been used to compare textbooks from three publishers. Concerning the findings, most publishers banalise Spanish nationalism paradoxically through the Basque language. Ikaselkar is the only one reproducing Basque identity in a nationalist —and not regionalist— fashion.
