Abstract

Chitin/gelatin/polyvinyl alcohol scaffolds were prepared by combining 3D printing and electrospinning techniques, resulting in structures with hierarchical porosity. Fruit fly pupae were investigated as an alternative source for chitin production. The extracted chitin showed high purity, and was combined with pig gelatin to obtain 3D printable ink (3DP ink). Gelatin with PVA was used as an electrospinable ink (ES ink) to fabricate nanofibre meshes. The use of different polymers conferred unique properties to the scaffolds, such as mucoadhesive properties and biocompatibility.
