Loneliness, elderly, health, nursing home and communityAbstract
Loneliness is a subjective experience in perceiving the network of human relationships and although it can appear at any time in the life cycle, older people are more vulnerable. The scientific literature has pointed out the relationship between health problems and loneliness, but there is less knowledge about the relationship between the feeling of loneliness and the health of the elderly, even more so in elderly people living in residential care than in those living in the community. Therefore, a cross-sectional descriptive study has been carried out to find out the relationship between loneliness and physical and psycho-emotional health in people over 60 years of age in the context of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa. It is observed that loneliness is related to functional status, increasing the degree of dependency in older people in the community and in residential care. Feeling lonely was also associated not only with anxiety and depression, but also with a worse perception of quality of life, being more evident in women than in men.
