Abstract

The high training of physicians, Internal Resident Physicians (MIR), has been described in the scientific literature as a period of great stress and vulnerability.

The aim of this study was to measure the anxiety levels of family physicians residing in Gipuzkoa. A descriptive and prospective study was conducted taking into account the quantitative and qualitative aspects of anxiety. This measurement was carried out using the standardized HADS questionnaire and a qualitative questionnaire generated for research. We have also taken the opportunity to analyze whether these symptoms were related to the year of formation, the type of hospital, gender, depression, and consensus in the choice of specialties. These questionnaires were conducted in October 2020 and March 2021 (within 5 months), in order to analyze whether there were changes in that time period. 50 % of residents have medium-high levels of anxiety. The low level of confidence and self-perception of anxiety have been described mainly on the eve of the guard, during the guard, and in emergencies. Physical and cognitive symptoms have appeared during the guard more often and emotional at times after the guard.

No significant statistical relationship has been found between variables. However, taking into account the quantitative and qualitative analyzes performed, we have seen that residents may be at risk of experiencing psychological distress.
