Abstract

This article examines the sociolinguistic effects of residential mobility on language use in the Southern Basque Country. Using microdata from the 2021 ECEPOV survey by INE (Spanish National Statistics Institute), new indicators were developed by cross-referencing speakers’ place of residence, place of birth, and parental origin across different sociolinguistic territorial zones. The results show that the majority of Spanish-dominant speakers in Basque-speaking places originate from more Spanish-speaking areas, while in contrast, speakers who use mainly Basque in Spanish-speaking zones disproportionately originate from more Basque-speaking territories. These findings confirm that the capacity of the Basque-speaking community to reproduce itself is closely linked to spatial-demographic conditions, and that inter-territorial mobility flows are structurally intertwined with the overall evolution of the language community.
