Abstract

This paper presents a research study on the impact of strategies for creating new Basque speakers on the region. It also presents a basic proposal for territorial intervention.
Based on data gathered during the Sociolinguistic Survey, the results reveal that the level of Basque language use among new Basque speakers varies widely in accordance with the municipality in which they reside: the more Basque is spoken in their environment, the more new Basque speakers use the language. We can deduce from this that the language revitalisation effort has yielded proportionally much better results in more Basque-speaking areas than in more Spanish-speaking ones.
The paper ends with a proposal for a territorial strategy to advance the language revitalisation process. The proposal recognises the leadership role played by more Basque-speaking areas and seeks to promote and disseminate Basque use in said areas as a means of enriching Basque use in the rest of the region. Within the framework of this strategy, it is essential to pay special attention to those areas that play this key role, and to determine the most effective way of ensuring this knock-on effect.
