This article is focusing on the experimentation of a multilingual approach to learning oral discourse in Basque and French, following the principles of integrated language teaching. The study will be held in a Basque language immersion high school, as part of the preparation for the bilingual “Grand Oral” assessment activity. Our project foresees the creation of school activities following a multilingual and integrated perspective. These activities will be sequenced switching languages, in an attempt to identify the didactic tools likely to optimize the acquisition of oral skills. The aim is to show that this didactic sequence can foster the development of multilingual oral explanatory skills, while reinforcing the creation of a discursive community in the minority language.

This article addresses the language switching between Basque and Spanish in a little studied context: the interventions at the Basque Parliament. A corpus of 30 interventions from 15 speakers has been analysed in order to determine how often, where and what for is language switching used. The results show that this is a common phenomenon among the analysed Basque politicians, particularly in the central part of the text. In addition, seven pragmatic functions that are potentially linked to the parliamentary interventions have also been detected.

In this paper I compare some old dialectal texts from central Gipuzkoa, in order to find out in which linguistic properties they coincide and in which they differ. These are the goals of the paper: to distinguish the linguistic areas that have existed in the Urola, Goierri, Tolosaldea and Beterri regions of Gipuzkoa; to determine which innovations define each linguistic area; and to know where those innovations have expanded/limited within the geographical area under research. Provisionally, four linguistic areas have been recognized. Also, I indicate some doubts and difficulties, which often arise when working with old texts.

Access to information, knowledge and culture is a right of all citizens. However, written text does not always match our ability to understand what we read. Easy to Read Language (E2R) aims to overcome these comprehension barriers, thus promoting equal opportunities. E2R contains a set of rules that may vary by language, and may also include examples, visual and/or auditory aids not found in the source text. Unfortunately, there are not many language resources or adaptation tools available for E2R. This thesis aims to evaluate existing resources for automatic E2R adaptation and to create new resources and adaptation tools. It will focus on three European languages: German, Spanish and Basque.

This paper proposes a study on the Family Language Policies that parents in Basque-speaking families in Vitoria-Gasteiz carry out when socialising multilingual children. To this end, special attention will be paid to Family Language Policies, that is, to the ideologies, strategies and linguistic practices of parents, focusing on Basque, Spanish and English. In addition it is also intended to analyse the agency of sons and daughters in the processes of linguistic socialisation, for which children's linguistic practices will also be studied. Therefore, the research instruments to be used for data collection will be a focus group, semi-guided individual interviews and direct and participatory observations. At the end, some hypotheses will be presented, taking into account some previous work along the same lines.

This article will analyse the role of Joseba Sarrionaindia’s closed moulds. Although these moulds, which are scattered across various genres, have been briefly mentioned or reviewed, there is a wider absence of systematic analyses of this work. Critics have pointed to the culturalism of the Basque poet; but have often been limited to pointing out intertextual relationships. Therefore, the aim of this article is to investigate this author’s use of cultured tradition, whilst placing special considerations to his use of closed moulds as an additional resource for creating culturalist bridges.

Adberbioak aztergai: kategoriaren auzia argitzeko zenbait gogoeta

Adverbs have been considered just like any other grammatical category (i.e. like nouns or adjectives) in traditional grammar (as for Basque, see Azkue, 1925; Lafitte, 1944; Euskaltzaindia, 1991, 2021; Hualde and Ortiz de Urbina, 2003; Salaburu et al., 2011–2019). However, in this paper, I will show that this perspective leads to various theoretical issues. Although these issues concern general linguistics, in this work, I will pay special attention to the classifications of Basque adverbs and similar words and I will offer a critical review of them. It will become apparent that elements that have been considered adverbs in Basque bring forward aspects that can be of great relevance to the general theory of grammatical categories, such as their formal and functional similarity to other categories.

Along with the Basque youth language, the phenomenon of code-switching (CS) has been observed in recent years. The aim of this study is to analyze the use of CS in bilingual Basque–Spanish youth and to identify some factors that may influence it: the first language of the speakers (L1), the Basque/Spanish competition and the sociolinguistic environment (according to the place of birth). To do this, and in order to deepen the use and attitudes of CS, I have taken advantage of the answers received from the online questionnaire that I designed in 2022: 244 bilingual Basque-Spanish youth from 18 to 30 years old. The results showed that the use of CS is widespread among Basque youth and that L1, the sociolinguistic environment and the Basque/Spanish competition influence it.

Inés Medinaren sorkuntza garaikidea historiaratzeko estrategiak

The place of Inés Medina's work in Basque historiography has been associated with abstraction, based on the artist's formal plastic study. However, in recent years she has made public a different painting, based on psychoanalysis and reflecting on gender-based violence. An example of this line is the pioneering 19th series. To investigate these works, I suggest building a new framework, as the one developed around abstraction does not seem applicable. In order to do this, I use two subjects that are important to feminism, and present in Medina's work: the relationship between body and mind, and femininity. I also contextualize her work with other contemporary artists who have dealt with violence against women.

Hizkuntza-aniztasuna eta elebitasuna afasiologian

The studies of aphasiology shows a great lack of linguistic diversity and bilingual research. This has serious consequences, on the one hand, because the symptomatology of aphasia differs from one language to another, and on the other hand, because in the case of bilingual people, the types of impairment and recovery can be different in each language. This study has analysed the papers on aphasia between 2010 and 2014 in order to know how linguistic diversity and bilingualism is represented in such literature and to fill the gap between Beveridge and Bak (2011) and Mendia (2022). The results reveal a similar trend over the last 20 years: the study of English individuals with aphasia stands out, along with the Indo-European languages, while studies on bilinguals are still very rare (6.72%).

The present work consists in the analysis of the baroque catholic temple as a space for the deployment of the senses of the faithful, focusing on the sensory and scenographic value of the religious art and architecture of the 17th century. For this purpose, the multisensory resources in festivities celebrated in the town will also be analysed; in this case, the ones which were at San Isidro’s canonization festivities. This proposal starts from the need to apply a methodology scarcely undertaken until recent years in Spanish historiography, which transcends the analysis of the merely material, in order to contemplate art, architecture and festivities from the emotional impact caused in the receiver.

Translation is often expected to be a neutral activity. However, translators must constantly make decisions that will inevitably have an effect on the final text. In this paper, we focus on one such circumstance: the translation of genderless forms in the Basque-Spanish language combination. After discussing certain theoretical aspects that must be considered when studying this phenomenon, such as the translators’ involvement in translation and collaborative or self-translations, we dive into this matter through examples from Eider Rodriguez’s short story book Bihotz handiegia and its Spanish translation.

This research work analyzes the circulation, usage and authorship of the arias in Alegria-Dulantzi between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. The study is based on the seven arias which appeared in the town’s Municipal Archive. The movement and production of the arias had been assigned to the cities within the State and the Basque Country, yet this research establishes that in the Basque Country, more specifically in the Llanada Alavesa, the people possessed their own routes of circulation for the music sheets and pieces they produced.

Meta-Empirical theory Assessment (MEA) argues that, due to the progressive distancing of theory from experiment, the way of evaluating contemporary physical theories has changed: as empirical confirmation became more difficult, physicists developed new methods to recognize which theories are worth pursuing, making it possible to assess theories with little or no empirical basis. At this year’s IkerGazte congress, I shall focus on a concrete physically relevant case study – Cosmic Inflation – and investigate how that theory adjusts to MEA. My central thesis is that Dawid’s three arguments represent well the reasons why most theoretical physicists keep trusting Cosmic Inflation but they do not guarantee its viability. To defend my point of view, I shall rely on the discussion that arose from the results of the Planck satellite in 2013.

Euskarazko lekuzko adposizio-e-tan barna, aldakortasuna sailkatzeko proposamen berri bat

There is no consensus when it comes to determine the items that are part of the adpositional category in Basque. In this sense, the aim of this work is to define better the groups within this category. After considering the most relevant morphosyntactic and semantic properties of Basque adpositions, I establish three main groups, simple locative adpositions (-ra, -tik), Axial Parts (azpi, gain) and Complex Directional Adpositions (-ra arte, -tik kanpo). In addition, I propose a grammaticalization chain that connects these groups between each other. Finally, I adopt a nanosyntactic approach to structurally illustrate the differences between complex adpositions and Axial Parts.

This paper presents an ongoing End of Master Thesis. The goal is to analyse case-marking and verbal agreement production by Basque children with Developmental Language Disorder. In order to determine the properties of language disorder, first, previous work on typical development must be reviewed; second, data has to be collected, and third, the results of typical and atypical participants have to be compared. The sample consists of three 11-year-old children (two typical and one with developmental language disorder sigs) who share language profile. The study will include LITMUS-SR and story-telling tasks. The prediction is that there will be significant differences between the typical and the atypical children in relation to the mentioned morphosyntactic characteristics.
